I’m headed to Vermont this weekend, so it’s appropriate that I’m raving about Dismantled, a chilling literary thriller set in a small liberal arts college in the Green Mountain state. Jennifer McMahon’s latest novel centers around a group of college seniors who call themselves “The Compassionate Dismantlers.” Lead by Suz, a charismatic, volatile artist, The Compassionate Dismantlers perform various acts of vandalism around their town, in the hopes of sending a message to commercially-brainwashed suburbanites. Their vandalism soon becomes something deeper, and more criminal—arson, destruction of private property, kidnapping—until one night changes everything. Now, nine years later, two of the group members—Henry and Tess—are married with a daughter, Emma, who has a lot of unusual habits and an often unsettling imaginary friend named Danner.
Soon, the past comes back to haunt them when one of their old friends, still feeling the effects of that fateful summer, commits suicide after receiving a mysterious postcard in the mail. Henry and Tess, terrified about the odd events taking place around them, fall further and further into their guilt and fear, eventually confronting the ghosts of the past head on. Though they may have moved on from their youth, the past isn’t ready to let go.
This book kept me up at night and gave me goosebumps—even while reading it on the morning commute. This is no ordinary thriller. Be sure to check it out—Dismantled hits shelves this June.
Did you ever see the episode of "Friends" when Joey puts the book "The Shining" into the freezer because he's scared?
Yeah, that's how I'd be with this book. Sounds really interesting, but I'm a wimp when it comes to things horrifying!
